Background of the Study

The rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have transformed various sectors, including education. One of the notable innovations in education is the use of AI-powered chatbots for academic advisory services. AI chatbots are intelligent systems designed to interact with students, provide guidance on academic matters, and assist in decision-making regarding course selection, career pathways, and general educational inquiries (Adebayo & Musa, 2024). These chatbots can function as virtual advisors, offering real-time, personalized assistance to students and reducing the workload on human academic counselors (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2023).

In secondary schools, academic advisory services play a crucial role in shaping students’ educational and career trajectories. However, traditional advisory systems face numerous challenges, such as counselor shortages, inconsistent guidance, and limited accessibility for students (Olawale & Ibrahim, 2023). AI chatbots have been proposed as a viable solution to these challenges, as they can provide round-the-clock support, answer frequently asked questions, and adapt to individual student needs using machine learning algorithms (Ibrahim & Okafor, 2024).

Despite these benefits, the effectiveness of AI chatbots in academic advisory services within Nigerian secondary schools, particularly in Jalingo, remains largely unexplored. Concerns such as chatbot accuracy, student trust, and digital literacy levels among both students and teachers may impact their adoption and effectiveness (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). Additionally, inadequate infrastructure, including limited internet access and lack of AI integration in school systems, may hinder the successful implementation of chatbot-driven advisory services.

This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of AI chatbots in academic advisory services in secondary schools in Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State. It will examine how well these chatbots meet student needs, their usability, and the challenges associated with their implementation.

Statement of the Problem

Traditional academic advisory services in secondary schools often suffer from inefficiencies, including limited availability of trained counselors, inconsistent student support, and overwhelming workloads for school administrators (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2023). As a result, many students lack adequate academic guidance, leading to poor subject selection, misaligned career aspirations, and general academic dissatisfaction (Olawale & Ibrahim, 2023).

AI chatbots have emerged as a potential solution to these issues by offering scalable, personalized, and immediate advisory services. However, their effectiveness in secondary school settings, particularly in Jalingo, remains uncertain. Key concerns include whether students find AI chatbots useful, whether these tools provide accurate and relevant guidance, and whether technological barriers affect adoption (Adebayo & Musa, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the impact of AI chatbots on academic advisory services by examining their usability, effectiveness, and the challenges associated with their implementation. Understanding these factors will provide insights into how AI-powered solutions can be better integrated into secondary school academic advisory frameworks.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of adoption and utilization of AI chatbots in academic advisory services in secondary schools in Jalingo.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of AI chatbots in providing relevant and personalized academic guidance to students.

  3. To identify challenges associated with the implementation of AI chatbot advisory services in secondary schools.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent have AI chatbots been adopted for academic advisory services in secondary schools in Jalingo?

  2. How effective are AI chatbots in providing personalized academic guidance to students?

  3. What are the major challenges hindering the effective implementation of AI chatbots in secondary school advisory services?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI chatbots are not widely adopted in secondary school academic advisory services in Jalingo.

  2. AI chatbots significantly improve the quality and accessibility of academic advisory services.

  3. Technological and infrastructural barriers limit the effectiveness of AI chatbot advisory services in secondary schools.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides valuable insights into the role of AI chatbots in enhancing academic advisory services in secondary schools. By assessing their effectiveness and identifying key challenges, the research will help school administrators, policymakers, and educational stakeholders make informed decisions regarding AI integration in student support services. Additionally, the study contributes to the growing body of literature on AI applications in education, offering recommendations for improving chatbot-based advisory systems in Nigerian schools.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to secondary schools in Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State. It focuses on evaluating AI chatbot effectiveness in academic advisory services, examining usability, and identifying challenges. It does not extend to higher education institutions, private tutoring services, or non-digital advisory systems.
